This biographical sketch of John Potts Jr., the son of Pennsylvania industrialist and founder of Pottstown, John Potts, details his many different professions. He was an ironmaster in Chester County and owned Warwick Furnace and Valley Forge; he was a lawyer, a justice of the peace, and a judge; and he was wealthy and part of the upper social class of pre-Revolutionary War Pennsylvania. During the war he supplied the British with information and was declared a traitor—losing his estates and wealth, becoming a refugee, and forever being known as “The Loyalist.”
