In Awe: A Mindfulness Series in the Lavender Fields

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Join us for an evening walk through the lavender fields designed to cultivate attention and deep connection. This four-week series is grounded in the research of mindfulness and awe developed by UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center and led by Heather Hurlock, former editor-in-chief of Mindful magazine and co-creator of the Awe Walk practice.

Mindfulness helps us return to the present moment; awe invites us to step outside ourselves and engage more fully with the world around us. Research suggests that experiences of awe can expand our sense of time, increase critical thinking, make us more generous, and more capable of the kind of open, humble attention that is the heart of mindfulness practice.

Each 75-minute gathering begins with a short introduction to the science and practice behind mindfulness and awe, followed by a guided meditation and a mindful awe walk in the lavender fields. We conclude with time for reflection and conversation in a brief sharing circle.

Suitable for all levels. No prior meditation experience is necessary. All sessions are rain or shine.

Consider signing up for Hilltop Aromatherapy Yoga which follows this experience.

Duration: 1 Hour | Four Consecutive Weekly Session (it is recommended but not required to sign up for all 4 sessions)

  • Week 1 Arriving Here: Presence as the doorway to awe. We begin by landing in the body, in the breath, in this beautiful landscape. We will set the foundation with a mindfulness of breath practice and then widen our perspective with an awe walk through the fields. ·(Thursday, June 18)

  • Week 2 Wide Open Senses: Working with all of the senses; the scent of lavender, the sound of wind through the fields, the low evening light.  We will explore how attention shapes our experience, Your nervous system responds before your mind has named anything. We deepen body awareness through a full-body scan meditation, and then bring that attunement into the lavender fields for an awe walk. (Thursday, June 25)

  • · Week 3 The Small Self and The Big World: Awe has a way of connecting us to the wider world. Research calls it the "small self" effect: in the presence of something vast, our self-monitoring quiets and something more generous takes its place. We will explore loving-kindness for ourselves and others, and carry that practice into the field for an awe walk. (Thursday, July 2 )

  • Week 4 Carrying Awe Into the World: Awe is not an escape. It is a way of being. Our final gathering focuses on how mindfulness and awe can continue beyond the farm; through finding awe in ordinary things, our relationship to others, and to the environments we inhabit, and how to return to it when the world narrows. We close with a final awe walk and reflection circle. (Thursday, July 9)
